Board Certifications
Specializing in breast procedures, body contouring, facial procedures, rhinoplasty, post-weight loss surgeries, and reconstructive surgeries, Dr. Nick has completed two full surgical residencies and is Board certified in two surgical specialties. He is Board Certified in Ear, Nose and Throat surgery by the American Board of Otolaryngology and is Board Certified in Plastic Surgery by the American Board of Plastic Surgery®. The ABPS is the only one of the 24 boards approved by the American Board of Medical Specialties that certifies physicians in plastic surgery of the face and all areas of the body.
Why Is Board Certification Important?
In Colorado, any licensed physician may perform plastic surgery procedures without being board-certified in plastic surgery. Even if he or she possesses other board certifications, what is important to look for is certification by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. If a surgeon is not certified by the AMPS board, they can still call themselves a “plastic surgeon” but please do not let them perform any cosmetic procedures on you.
Society Memberships
In addition to being double board certified, Dr. Nick is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) and the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS).
ASPS membership is the gold-standard for plastic surgeons and the most important credential to look for when choosing a plastic surgeon. This credential indicates that the surgeon has completed a combination of at least five years of surgery training with a minimum of two years of plastic surgery training, and has passed comprehensive oral and written exams in plastic surgery including a detailed review of the surgeon’s own patient care and outcomes. Membership in ASPS also requires the surgeon to be certified by The American Board of Plastic Surgery (or The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada®). This credential ensures that the surgeon operates only in accredited surgical facilities, adheres to the strict ASPS Code of Professional Ethics, regularly fulfills continuing medical education requirements, and completes ongoing education in Patient Safety Standards and innovations in plastic surgery.
ASPS membership is the single most important credential to look for when seeking out a plastic surgeon. No other credential provides as broad of an assurance of years of Plastic Surgery residency training, Board Certification by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, ongoing medical and patient safety education, use of accredited facilities and the highest level of ethical standards in all of aesthetic medicine.
ASAPS is the leading organization of board-certified plastic surgeons specializing in cosmetic plastic surgery. The additional “A” stands for “Aesthetic” plastic surgery. If there is any credential that a plastic surgeon can attain that demonstrates a true dedication to aesthetic (cosmetic) surgery it is ASAPS membership. ASAPS members must meet additional requirements for continuing education and experience in cosmetic surgery. As the largest organization of American and international aesthetic plastic surgeons, the ASAPS hosts leading scientific meetings dedicated to education and research in cosmetic surgery and procedures. The ASAPS has a special focus on patient safety issues as well as on the effectiveness of new technologies and procedures.
